How do I identify the specific Maine regulations and required permits that apply to my business?

For State of Maine Licenses, Permits, and Regulations, go to Business Answers where you will find the Business Licensing Assistant. Choose the first option, “Start a business in Maine,” and answer the brief interview questions that determine what state forms you'll need. At the end of the process, the Assistant provides you with a list of all the State of Maine licenses you will need, the names and telephone numbers of the licensing agencies, and other pertinent information about your particular kind of business.

Choose the other Business Answers option, “Search for a license or permit,” and you will be asked to enter a keyword and/or agency. This is helpful for those searching for a particular license or permit to renew it, for example.

If you prefer talking to one of our Governor's Account Executives to go through the one-stop licensing process, just contact Business Answers through our toll-free telephone line (1-800-872-3838).

Local Regulations and Permits are the responsibility of local, city and town governments. In all cases you are advised to inquire about relevant local regulations at the city hall/town office in the community where you plan to conduct business.

Local resources – Several regional and local organizations provide business counseling and other services.
