Take the Required Steps to Become an Employer?

The first step is to obtain a Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN). If you already have an EIN you will need to notify the IRS that you wish to activate as an employer. This starts the process of setting you up with federal withholding and unemployment. After you have an EIN you will need to sign up with State of Maine withholding. You will likely need to obtain Worker’s Compensation Insurance on your employees. Eventually you will have to sign up with the State of Maine Unemployment Division. There are other basic things that need to be done.
