This is a public resource provided by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection for Maine's coastal beach monitoring results and advisories and closures. Learn more about the MHB Program.

Maine's Beach Action Value (BAV or safety threshold) for Enterococcus bacteria in marine waters is 104 MPN/100mL. MHB recommends posting an Elevated Bacteria Advisory when results are ≥ BAV. Posting decisions are made by participating Management Entities, which are the towns, parks, or associations responsible for managing the beach.

Maine Healthy Beaches Program

The Maine Healthy Beaches (MHB) program is a statewide effort to monitor water quality and protect public health at Maine's participating coastal saltwater beaches. The MHB program is voluntary and is not mandated by Maine State law. Monitoring coastal water quality for swimming and other water contact is the responsibility of local jurisdictions. Local beach managers use MHB data to make informed management decisions in support of protecting public health.

Notice:  Moderate to heavy rainfall can increase bacteria levels at the beach. It is recommended to avoid water contact for at least 24-48hrs after rainfall ceases.
